Position Summary

Evergreen is seeking a highly motivated individual to serve as a Press Secretary for the States Program. The States Press Secretary will lead communications and media outreach for Evergreen’s new and growing states team, lead development and expansion for the program’s communications plan, and will be responsible for crafting communications materials for the program, including but not limited to talking points, memos, op-eds, memos, and press releases. 

The ideal candidate is an exceptional writer and communicator that has significant experience developing relationships with reporters and working with press, including on-the-record experience, story pitching, rapid response and social media.

Responsibilities and Tasks 

    • Spearheading communications planning and execution for the states team, working closely with consultants and other members of the team to identify and maximize communications opportunities
    • Partner with teams across the organization to bring state-level climate policy to life for the press 
    • Drafting and editing  press releases, memos, talking points, op-eds, and other materials as needed under tight deadlines;
    • Developing relationship with state press corps in target states, as well as national and climate press outlets and reporters;
    • Proactively seeking out news opportunities and creative placement strategies as part of short- and long-term planning;
    • Assisting in the development and implementation of earned media plans, building media events and garnering significant press coverage for cutting edge climate policy and advocacy efforts;
    • Identifying and executing rapid-response opportunities for media engagement;

Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Ability

    • 4+ years of experience in campaigns, issue advocacy, or a related field; candidates with experience in Michigan or Pennsylvania are a significant plus
    • Ability to build and execute robust, multi-state communications plans
    • Highly motivated, a strong and fast writer, who is willing to pick up pieces of projects when needed as well as take ownership of projects and see them through to completion. 
    • On-the-record and/or media relations experience required. Experience with climate issues a significant plus.
    • Experienced coming up with story ideas and finding creative ways to drive press.
    • Ability to work in a fast paced environment, prioritize tasks, learn quickly.
    • High attention to detail
    • Ability to multi-task and manage multiple projects at once
    • Ability to work well with multiple teammates and across multiple teams
    • Passion for defeating climate change 

First-Year Milestones

In your first 90 days you will have:

    • Gained a strong working knowledge of Evergreen, our target states and, our priority issues 
    • Taken over drafting press materials for the states program
    • Reached out to and begun building relationships with relevant national and target state reporters
    • Worked with the rest of the states team to identify 2023 communications goals

In 6 months you will have:

    • Developed individualized communications plans for target states, tailored to the unique environment and advocacy priorities in each state
    • Built relationships with national reporters covering state climate policy and members of the press corps in target states
    • Successfully earned media coverage in every target state

In 1 year you will have:

    • Identified and capitalized on opportunities to inject Evergreen’s states work into both state and national news cycles
    • Developed 2024 states programs communications plans, informed by lessons learned and knowledge gained through your work the 2023 program

Compensation and Benefits

Salary: $92-105K/year
