Position Summary

Evergreen seeks a Senior Policy Director to help us maximize our impact by advancing the policies that are needed to confront the climate crisis and build a just, thriving and inclusive clean energy economy. This role is responsible for leading a policy team that sits at the center of our theory of change, developing and advancing bold, actionable climate policies.

The Senior Policy Director leads the organization in moving aggressively to identify and seize new opportunities and respond to breaking developments that arise around climate policy in the Biden administration and in Congress. The Senior Policy Director will also work with the States team to help advance climate action at the state level, and with our Campaigns, Communications and Digital teams to maximize the reach and impact of Evergreen’s policy interventions, with policymakers, the press, and the public.

Responsibilities and Tasks 

  • Lead Evergreen’s policy agenda, including primary responsibility for developing and advancing the organization’s policy priorities.
  • Manage a policy team of staff and consultants in their work researching, developing and communicating around policies needed to build a just, inclusive and thriving clean energy economy—including in the power sector, transportation, buildings, industrial sectors, environmental justice, and conservation.
  • Demonstrate thought leadership for the organization, and the climate movement, in advancing a bold, actionable policy agenda based on standards, investments and justice.
  • Work with Campaigns, Communications and Digital teams to communicate Evergreen policy positions to federal lawmakers, advocacy partners, the press, and the public.
  • Partner with the States team to help advance climate action at the nexus of federal and state policy.

First-Year Milestones

In your first 90 days you will have: 

  • Established effective management systems and work plans for the Policy Team.
  • Worked with the Evergreen leadership team to identify and make progress on near-term priority policy products and areas of focus.
  • Managed or executed regular policy analyses, and organizational communique, on federal regulatory and legislative policy matters.

In 6 months you will have:

  • Built a strategy for the structure, operations and growth of the Policy Team to continue to meet core organization goals, over the intermediate and long term. 
  • Exercised Evergreen’s policy input to inform federal policy that is advancing in federal agencies and Congress, and its debate in the public and press.

In 1 year you will have:

  • Advanced key policies across Evergreen’s range of sectoral priorities.
  • Maintained and expanded Evergreen’s voice as an authority on the federal policies necessary to tackle the climate crisis and build a thriving, just and inclusive clean energy economy.

What You Bring

  • 10+ years of experience in policy research, development and/or advocacy in government or for a non-profit or comparable organization
  • Excellent personnel management skills and ability to collaboratively and clearly lead multiple stakeholders to successful completion of numerous projects simultaneously
  • Expertise in federal climate policy
  • An ideas-generator mindset, and ability to ideate something new and see it through completion 
  • Passion for the role of policy in building a better world

Compensation and Benefits

Salary: 170,000 - 185,000
