No Climate, No Deal

“No climate, no deal.” -Senator Ed Markey (D-MA)

Following reporting that a bipartisan group of Senators have put yet another tiny infrastructure proposal on the table that includes only $579 billion in new spending and indications from Republican members of the group that the bill excludes climate provisions, Evergreen Action Executive Director Jamal Raad released the following statement:

“This infrastructure deal that excludes climate investment is a failure, period. With only a fraction of the investments proposed in President Biden’s American Jobs Plan, this deal fails the clear test that Democratic leaders laid out yesterday. Multiple Senators have already clearly said: ‘No climate, no deal.’ There should be no question: any deal that excludes or goes small on climate cannot pass the U.S. Senate.

“We already know from weeks of failed negotiations that Republicans are categorically opposed to the investments we need to build the clean energy economy, and this latest tentative bipartisan deal is yet another bad-faith GOP effort that would move us backwards in the fight against the climate crisis. An infrastructure bill that doesn’t include transformational investments in climate and environmental justice solutions is a non-starter.”
