Evergreen: Australian Election Results Are a Wake Up Call for Democrats

In response to the results of the Australian election, Evergreen Action Executive Director Jamal Raad released the following statement:

“The Australian election sends a clear message around the world: elected officials must take action to address the climate crisis, to save the planet and to save their jobs. Climate is a winning issue—even in one of the most fossil-fuel dependent countries in the world. Climate voters are making their voices heard around the world and they will make the difference in elections everywhere. Voters worldwide are increasingly seeing the climate crisis in their communities: from floods and fires to polluted water to unbearable heat waves. They demand action from their leaders.

“Australia’s results show that incumbent politicians need to deliver on both climate action and inflation relief, or they will lose their power. Fortunately, President Joe Biden has the opportunity to address both climate and inflation with the passage of a reconciliation bill. Passing a reconciliation bill with robust climate investments will lower inflation, reduce fuel price volatility, mitigate the threat of climate catastrophe, and create millions of jobs in a clean energy economy. The Australian elections should be a wake up call that President Biden and Majority Leader Schumer must pass a climate bill in order to avoid midterm disaster.”
