In response to Republicans shutting down the government despite holding full control of Congress and the White House, Evergreen Action Executive Director Lena Moffitt released the following statement:

“Republicans fully control the government—and they’ve chosen chaos over responsible governing. By shutting the government down and threatening mass firings of federal employees, Donald Trump and Republicans are both stripping away access to essential programs millions of Americans rely on to make their lives more affordable and putting disaster relief at risk in the middle of hurricane season. Republicans chose to shut the government down instead of lowering costs and stopping Donald Trump’s abuse of power to attack clean energy and other laws he doesn’t like.

“This is part of a broader pattern of abuse. While Trump brags about gilding the Oval Office, working families can’t pay their bills because his illegal tariffs are driving up prices. While he funnels hundreds of millions in taxpayer dollars to coal barons to prop up dirty, expensive fossil fuels, Americans’ utility bills are soaring as he chokes off cheaper clean energy. And while millions recover from floods, hurricanes, and wildfires, he’s gutted FEMA and the National Weather Service while weaponizing disaster aid against states that don’t toe his line.

“Republicans have a choice: they can negotiate in good faith on a bipartisan budget that lowers costs, or they can grind the government to a halt, shred the Constitution, and hand Trump even more dangerous tools to rule by fiat. So far, they’ve chosen chaos and crisis. And it’s the American people who will pay the price in higher costs, fewer services, and greater risk. But it will be the American people who hold them accountable.”
