Whitehouse-DelBene Bill Takes Big Step Toward Cleaning Up Our Industrial Sector

In response to Senator Whitehouse (D-RI) and Representative DelBene’s (D-WA) introduction of the Clean Competition Act, a bill that would create a Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), Evergreen Action Policy Lead for Energy Transition Mattea Mrkusic released the following statement:

“American heavy industry is a major source of pollution that is exacerbating the climate crisis and harming frontline communities. Sen. Whitehouse and Rep. DelBene’s Clean Competition Act supports a strong industrial decarbonization effort that would help level the playing field for American suppliers offering clean alternatives within our nation’s supply chain.

“It’s especially encouraging to see that the proposed bill prioritizes reinvesting in domestic decarbonization efforts. As cleaning up heavy industry comes to the forefront of the clean energy transition, it’s mission-critical that any final CBAM legislation foregrounds strong equity design principles. This includes centering issues like equitably redistributing revenue to Black, Brown, Indigenous, and worker communities both here at home and abroad – as well as providing substantial financial assistance and technology transfer to support developing countries to decarbonize heavy industry.”
