Democrats’ Budget Resolution Is Important Step In Path To Build Back Better And Defeat Climate Change

With Democrats putting forward a budget resolution that invests ambitiously in a bold climate future, Evergreen Action Executive Director Jamal Raad released the following statement:

“With millions of lives and livelihoods on the line, Democrats have stepped up by announcing a bold budget resolution that includes the most significant investments to fight the climate crisis in U.S. history. These investments will be key to meaningfully reduce America’s carbon pollution and get our nation on track towards an equitable and thriving clean energy future. This resolution makes historic investments in climate, jobs, and justice.

“The code red IPCC report released today underscores the gravity of this moment: Congress must step up and pass this budget resolution to deliver the bold action needed on climate.  Then, Majority Leader Schumer, Speaker Pelosi, and the entire Senate and House Democratic caucuses must follow through to deliver the climate investments America needs to truly Build Back Better.”

Last month, Evergreen released 6 Key Climate Investments that Must Be in Budget Reconciliation, detailing six areas of critical investments in climate, jobs and justice that were not included in the bipartisan infrastructure deal, and that needed to be included in budget reconciliation legislation. According to an accompanying memo released by Senate Democrats, the following policies were among the Evergreen priorities that are included in the budget resolution:

  • A Clean Electricity Payment Program (CEPP) that mimics the impacts of a federal Clean Electricity Standard (CES)

  • Clean energy, manufacturing, and transportation tax incentives

  • Consumer rebates to weatherize and electrify homes

  • Environmental justice investments

  • A Clean Energy Technology Accelerator that would fund low-income solar and other climate-friendly technologies

  • A Civilian Climate Corps

  • Financing for domestic manufacturing of clean energy and auto supply chain technologies

  • Rural development and rural co-op clean energy investments

  • Investments in clean vehicles and in electrifying the federal vehicle fleet (USPS and Non-USPS)
