Yesterday, the Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC) released its 2025 Utility Energy Waste Reduction Programs Annual Report, which found that the state’s energy efficiency programs will save customers more than $1.4 billion on their energy bills. In response, Evergreen Action State Advocacy Director Courtney Brady released the following statement:

“Thanks to the energy efficiency programs strengthened by Michigan’s clean energy laws, customers are on track to save more than $1.4 billion—more than twice the amount invested in these programs. It’s concrete proof that strong clean energy policies deliver real savings for families and help lower energy bills.

“The opportunity ahead is even bigger. Independent analysis shows that weatherization could save Michigan families nearly $1 billion through 2040, or about $2,700 per participating household. But rolling back these programs and the state’s 2023 clean energy laws could cost Michigan households $8.9 billion. The evidence is clear: these policies are delivering real savings, and repealing them would mean higher energy bills for Michigan families.”

Last month, Evergreen Action and Michigan League of Conservation Voters partnered with Greenline Insights on an analysis comparing two policy pathways for Michigan: building on the state’s clean energy laws or rolling back those policies. The analysis found that a package building on the state’s clean energy laws, including expanded weatherization and energy efficiency like those included in the MPSC’s report, would save the average household another $638 through 2040, while a package repealing the 2023 laws would raise the average household’s bills by $2,135 over the same period.
