Trump Guts Fuel-Economy Standards, Handing Another Win to Big Oil

Today, the Trump administration announced a rollback of fuel economy standards for cars, SUVs, and pickup trucks, lowering the average miles-per-gallon requirement to 34.9 in 2031. The rollback would cost an average driver over $1,400 more in fuel costs over the lifetime of their vehicle. In response, Evergreen Action Federal Affairs Director Dani Huppert released the following statement:

“Under Trump, Americans are already paying nearly $4.50 for a gallon of gas, and now he’s handing Big Oil another gift. Weaker fuel standards mean less efficient cars and more trips to the pump. Even the administration’s own analysis shows that rolling back standards will cost families more than $1,400 over the lifetime of their vehicle—more money flowing straight to oil companies’ wallets.

“First, Trump weakened tailpipe emission standards. Then he killed the tax credits that were saving families thousands on electric vehicle purchases. Now, he’s making every new car burn more gas. Trump is once again putting Big Oil’s profits over the affordable, clean energy Americans want. In November, voters will remember who drove up their costs.”
