PA House Lawmakers Pass Bill Shining Light on Utility Decision-making, Putting Public Interest over Corporate Profits

Today, the Pennsylvania House of Representatives overwhelmingly voted to pass HB 1599, legislation that would bring greater transparency to utility decision-making by requiring public disclosure of committee votes at PJM and other energy regulatory bodies. In response, Evergreen Deputy State Policy Director Julia Kortrey released the following statement:

“Too many of Pennsylvania’s energy decisions are made behind closed doors, with no accountability to the families and businesses who end up footing the bill. For too long, those with a financial stake in the status quo have been allowed to vote in private with little incentive to vote in the public interest. This bill would change that by requiring PJM and other key utility committees to publicly disclose votes, bringing long-overdue transparency to a system where fossil fuel interests have appeared to quietly delay cheaper, cleaner energy from coming online. This transparency is a commonsense step toward fixing PJM’s broken interconnection process and ensuring decisions serve the public interest—not corporate profits. It’s how we begin to confront Pennsylvania’s growing affordability crisis head-on.

"We applaud Rep. Rabb for his leadership and the bill’s co-sponsors for demanding transparency and accountability for their constituents. The Senate must act without delay to deliver the reforms Pennsylvanians deserve.”
