Democratic Victories In Massachusetts and Maryland Open The Door For Ambitious Climate Action

In response to the results of the gubernatorial elections in Massachusetts and Maryland, Evergreen Action Executive Director Jamal Raad released the following statement:

“Tonight, the voters of Massachusetts and Maryland set a new course for their states’ fight against the climate crisis. Governors-Elect Maura Healey and Wes Moore ran on platforms of moving their states more aggressively towards clean energy goals and they won decisive victories. In both states, the governor's mansion is set to transfer from Republicans who often took a back seat on climate action, to true climate champions. With hundreds of billions of federal dollars available for states to act on climate through the Inflation Reduction Act, states with governors willing to go big on climate will create more jobs, save consumers money, and achieve more pollution reductions.

“With Maura Healey’s record of taking on the fossil fuel industry’s lies and Wes Moore’s bold vision for whole-of-government climate action, Maryland and Massachusetts are poised to take major steps forward as national leaders on climate action. Healey and Moore’s wins tonight are a major victory for climate action in America.”
