IPCC Report Makes it Clear: Biden and Congress Must Act On Climate

In response to the new report released today by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), Evergreen Action Chief of Staff Lena Moffitt released the following statement:

“Today’s IPCC report leaves no room for doubt: our window of opportunity to prevent the worst impacts of climate change is closing, fast. From water scarcity, to food insecurity, to the worldwide rise in heat-related illness and death, we are already witnessing the devastating impacts of this crisis. If we don’t take bold action now, we won’t be able to reverse course in our lifetimes. We know what it will take to tackle the climate crisis head-on, and Congress must start by delivering the $555 billion in climate investments that were contained in the Build Back Better Act. Majority Leader Chuck Schumer must put climate at the top of the Senate’s agenda and strike a deal that will push these investments over the finish line.

“When President Biden addresses the American people tomorrow in his State of the Union address, he will have to be bold and resolute to the multiple crises our world faces. While the Biden administration has taken important steps to launch a whole-of-government response to climate change, they simply have not done enough to reduce greenhouse gas pollution in line with the science-based targets President Biden committed to.

“The science in this report is clear: the president, and Congress, simply have to do more, faster, if there is any chance of mitigating the worst effects of this crisis. The knock on the door is loud and clear, this is our last best chance to address this climate crisis and forge a pathway towards a liveable future.”
