In response to the news that the Trump administration admitted in court documents that it terminated more than $7.5 billion in clean energy grants “based solely” on whether states voted for Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 election, Evergreen Action Executive Director Lena Moffitt released the following statement:
“In one of their most naked abuses of power to date, the Trump administration just admitted in federal court that they revoked billions in legally awarded clean energy funding solely to punish his political opponents. There was no other reason—no waste, no poor performance, no legal authority. Only retribution. And every working family in those states, including his own voters, got handed the bill. These were projects to modernize the grid, cut pollution, and create thousands of jobs, canceled because their state didn’t deliver its electoral votes to Donald Trump.
“This is Trump’s governing ethos: political retribution at all costs, no matter the price working people pay. He promised to cut energy bills in half within a year of taking office. Instead, bills are soaring, because his retribution tour doubles as a payout to the coal barons and Big Oil donors who bankrolled his campaign—propping up dirty, expensive fossil fuels while driving up costs for everyone else.
“Now he’s rushing to finalize rules that would give him sweeping power to cut off over $1 trillion in annual federal grants from anyone who doesn’t fall in line. Trump is turning the entire federal budget into a loyalty test. And his unconstitutional abuses of power are a direct attack on the very people he was elected to serve.”
