Today, Senate Republicans passed their version of Trump’s Big Oil Billionaire bill, his signature giveaway to American oligarchs and the ultra-wealthy, paid for by raiding the wallets of working people. Like their House colleagues, Senate Republicans voted to repeal clean energy investments, making it harder to deliver the only new sources of electricity we can build fast enough to meet surging demand from data centers and extreme heat. It threatens rolling blackouts, skyrocketing energy bills, and stalled energy development. To add insult to injury, Republicans also voted to slash food assistance and kick millions off their health care just as working-class Americans face a growing affordability crisis.
In response, Evergreen Action Executive Director Lena Moffitt released the following statement:
“Senate Republicans just voted to trigger the largest spike in utility bills in American history. Calling it a ‘once-in-a-generation opportunity,’ they proudly pushed a morally bankrupt agenda that eviscerates food aid, rips away health care from millions, and jacks up already high energy costs to pay for yet another tax windfall for the ultra-rich. The bill is so devastating that their most vulnerable member announced he would retire rather than vote for it.
“Who is this bill actually for? Not automakers. Not utilities. Not coal miners. Not construction workers. Not hospitals or doctors. None of them want it, and the American people certainly don’t either. The only ones cheering it are billionaires, dying coal barons, Big Oil executives, and the morally depraved authoritarian president and Congressional Republicans they’ve bought and paid for.
“Republicans will walk out of the chamber today and lie to the American people about what this bill does. But make no mistake, they just voted to wreak economic and environmental catastrophe. If it becomes law, it’s their own voters who will turn on them for choosing the American oligarchy over the American working class.”
